We are committed to continuous improvement, which means reviewing established ways of working to ensure they remain fit for purpose in an era of rapid technological advances.

As a result of this open approach, we have recently invested in a newly created ‘Yard Supervisor’ team at our busy Walworth Garage. Eugene Clarke, Head of Stakeholder Engagement, met colleagues on-site at the building earlier this week, who explained how this role evolved, its key responsibilities and future plans.

Gabriel Collins, Fleet Manager (Walworth), takes up the story: “The Yard Supervisor post reinforces the company’s ‘Safety First’ culture. It brings together, in a more accountable manner, elements of certain existing roles and some fresh responsibilities. It covers vehicle preparation, first use checks, effective e-bus charging and supervising departures to ensure they are timely.”

Paul Hennigan, Fleet and Facilities Director said: “Essentially, the position focuses on achieving performance targets by co-ordinating and overseeing the all-important yard operations, in the process ensuring buses are efficiently prepared to be safe, service-ready and legally compliant. Outputs are audited, recorded and measured, which generates a useful data set.

It is a great initiative and really rewarding to see some existing colleagues promoted, at the same time as welcoming new people into the business. Based on a very encouraging start at Walworth, the engineering department plans to introduce Yard Supervisors at all locations over the coming months.”

Patrick Connolly, Electric Bus Support Manager, added: “In addition to getting vehicles ready for service, Yard Supervisors also ensure health and safety compliance in and around the building. I look forward to seeing them at other garages in due course.”
