We were pleased to recently participate in an interactive online interview hosted by Learn Live UK, as part of their ‘Travel Safe Friendly’ initiative (link below provides additional information).
Twickenham based Driver Manager Aran Holder, whose 14-year career has seen him undertake driving, supervisory and management roles, answered questions on the practical measures passengers should consider when using London’s comprehensive bus network.
Having driven and regulated buses, Aran currently manages around 200 drivers and is well versed in the rules associated with bus travel in the capital. During a 20-minute interview with Learn Live UK, Aran offered the following advice:
· Plan ahead and use the many travel apps and websites for up-to-date travel information, as London’s bus services are sometimes subject to delays and diversions.
· The driver is there to help, so if someone needs assistance, wait until the bus has stopped and ask for it (do not distract a driver while the vehicle is in motion).
· Report any suspicious activity.
· Be polite to fellow passengers and also the driver.
· Look out for anyone who might be vulnerable.
· Ensure priority seating is accessible to those who need it.
· When waiting for a bus keep well away from the kerb and board in an orderly manner.
· Transport for London’s recently updated Conditions of Carriage document (link below), details what is, and is not, allowed on a bus.
· Avoid consuming smelly food while on board.
· Be mindful of the volume created by a personal device.
· Keep feet off seats.
· Ring the bell once to stop.
· For safety reasons, be aware that bus drivers cannot open doors between stops, even when stationary or in slow moving traffic.
· Listen out for announcements during a journey.
Angie Ryder, Head of Operations said: “Congratulations to Learn Live UK for creating a forum that attracted over 4,500 students from around 150 schools. Very well done also to Aran for expertly addressing topics and reinforcing several important messages, not least of which being that London’s professional bus drivers are there to help should a passenger require assistance.”
